I am 71 years of age and have lived and worked in the Weston super Mare area most of my life.
I originally trained as a geography teacher, graduating from the University of Manchester in 1966 and undertook a PGCE at Southampton University the following year.
After 5 years as head of geography at Nailsea School I was appointed to Priory School when it opened in Worle in 1975. I continued working there as Head of Lower School, Deputy Head and then 16 years as Headteacher until I retired in 2000.
I then spent 5 years working part time as Head of the Pupil Referral Service in Somerset, based in Taunton. In this post I was responsible for managing the Pupil Referral Units in the County as well as liaising with the Youth Offending Team, the Youth Service and the service for Special Educational Needs.
From 2001 until 2010 I was chairman of the Governors at Ashcombe Primary School and for part of that time I chaired the Management Board of the Ashcombe Children's Centre.
I was a trustee of the Springboard Opportunity Group, a pre-school for children with severe learning difficulties, from 2001 until 2015.
Away from education, I spent 23 years as a magistrate on the North Somerset Bench. I served as vice chairman of the bench and latterly specialised in the work of the family courts in Somerset, which involved me in care and protection proceedings, and arrangements for the residence, care, custody and adoption of children.
I also chaired the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee, the body responsible for the recruitment of magistrates in the Bristol, Bath and Somerset areas. In March 2015, when I reached the compulsory retirement age of 70, I stepped down from the bench.
In my increased leisure time since my retirement, I enjoy being with our 3 pre-school grandchildren and their parents, as well as gardening, cycling and going to the gym. We also have a large garden which keeps my wife and I busy throughout the year!
